(Reader Name)’s POV

“Come on Gil, it’s time to wake up…” You gently shook the young boy’s shoulder.

Gilbert moaned and curled up, burying his face into the mattress.

“Wake up sweetie…wake up for mama, ok?”

Gilbert shook his head and mumbled a barely audible, “no.”

You sighed and looked down at your son in bewilderment.  “Gilbert, Ludwig woke up about thirty minutes ago.  Roderich and Vash woke up even earlier than him, and they’re ready to leave.  You need to wake up now.”

Gilbert groaned.  “I don’t care!  I’m…too awesome to wake up this…early.”

You frowned.  Gilbert had overslept and was now holding everyone up with his lateness.  You’d been begging the stubborn boy to get out of bed for a while now, and you had lost most of your patience.

Suddenly, you had an idea.  “Well Gilbert, we’ll just have to leave you behind, since you don’t want to get out of bed.  Bye Gil!”

You got up from where you’d been sitting on the bed and walked out of the bedroom just as Gilbert sat up in his bed, worried.  Waiting outside of the bedroom was Otho, Roderich, Vash, and Ludwig.

You’d all decided it was a good idea to disguise yourselves when you visited the neighboring kingdoms.  It was safer, and if the wrong people found out you were a part of the royal family, you would be in danger.

Vash was wearing the rags he’d worn when he’d lived on the streets.  Roderich was wearing his tattered and dirty clothing from when he’d lived with Vash in the abandoned factory.

It had been harder for you, Otho, and Ludwig to dress in clothing like Roderich and Vash’s.  None of you had old or dirty clothing, but you’d managed to find clothes that wouldn’t stand out much and were relatively modest.

You had clothing for Gilbert stacked at the end of his bed.  If your plan worked, Gilbert would be out of his room, dressed and ready to leave, in only a few seconds.

“Mama!  Papa!  Don’t leave me!  I don’t want to stay here alone!” you heard Gilbert call from his bedroom.

You giggled.  Gilbert didn’t like staying at the castle alone, partially because he would be lonely with only the guards to entertain him, and also because he was a little scared staying at the castle without the rest of his family.

As the six of you left the castle, Ludwig ran up to you and held your hand.  “Are we walking to town again today?”

You smiled at the young boy and shook your head.  “We’re not going to town today.  We’re going to visit the neighboring kingdoms, which used to be one large kingdom.”

Ludwig’s eyes grew in excitement, and he ran over to Otho.  He slipped his little hand into Otho’s larger one.  “Does that mean we’re riding in the carriage?”

Otho nodded.  “It’s going to take awhile for us to get there.”

“Are the kingdoms we’re visiting the one Vash is the king of?” Ludwig asked.

“I’m not the king yet…” Vash said, walking up beside Ludwig.

“I’ll be a king also!”  Roderich said, trying to catch up to Vash and Ludwig.

“Cool!” Ludwig jumped up and down happily.  “Can I be a king too?”

“I’m not sure, we’ll have to ask mama to get her permission!” Roderich said.

You smiled as you listened to their conversation.  You glanced down at Gilbert, who was sleepily walking beside you.

“I’m tired…”

“You can sleep in the carriage.” You said, ruffling his platinum-blonde hair.

Finally reaching the carriage, all of you went inside. On one side, Ludwig sat in Otho’s lap and took a nap, and Gilbert rested his head on your lap as he slept, both of you on the other side of the carriage.  Vash and Roderich sat beside you and looked out the window.

Roderich’s POV

“Are you excited?” I asked Vash.

“Of course I am!  Are you?” He asked me.

I nodded.  “I wonder what the kingdoms we’re visiting will be like?”

“I’m not sure…I’ve never visited another kingdom before.  Do you think the people that live there will hate us?” Vash worried.

I narrowed my eyes.  “Why would they hate us?  Wouldn’t they be happy to see us, especially since they’ve been searching for us for a long time?”

Vash shrugged.  “You have a point.  But if we become kings, we’ll ruin their entire government system!  The people that we’ll rule over could get mad…”

“Do they even have a government system?  I thought old kingdom was split into little towns now, and that each town was a kingdom in itself?”  I said, confused.

Vash sighed and leaned his back against the soft upholstery in the carriage.  “I have no idea anymore; I’m just as confused as you are now.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

Papa picked up a map he’d brought with him off his seat.  “I read a little more about the kingdoms, and I understand a lot now.  After reading several books that had information that…didn’t add up and confused us…I think I’ve figured out everything now.  There used to be one large kingdom, until their royal family died out, or disappeared, or whatever ended up happening to them.  Strangely, there are living heirs to the throne.  Apparently, those heirs are you two.  Regardless, the towns in the old kingdom began to split up since there was no longer a king and queen to rule over them, so now they’re just little towns.  They belong to no kings or queens, and they’ve been waiting for the heirs of the throne to return to them so they can become liberated again.  Still, since they’re no longer really affiliated with the other towns, I suppose you could consider them little kingdoms.”

I frowned.  “I’m happy you finally found out everything; it’s been hard keeping up with all the changes in information.  And I’m still confused.”

Mama giggled.  “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll understand once we arrive!”

“Well then, where are we going?” Vash asked.  “There isn’t just one kingdom anymore, so…”

“First, we’re going to the former capital city, where the royal family once lived.  It’s the largest city in the area, which I guess means it’s the largest of the mini kingdoms that once made up one large kingdom..” Mama said.

“How big is it?” I asked.

“According to this map,” papa motioned to the map he was holding, “The capital city is larger than…the kingdom we live in.”

I gasped, and Vash’s eyes widened.

“Once we liberate the towns to become one kingdom again, how will we be capable of ruling over it?” I asked.

“How are we going to liberate the towns!?” Vash asked.

Both of us were very nervous; we were barely capable of taking care of ourselves!  How would we take care of thousands of people that would live in the new liberated kingdom?

Suddenly, the carriage came to an abrupt stop.  Vash and I slid forward in our seats, and so did the rest of our family.

All of us became silent.  We glanced over at one another, all of us confused.  Why had the carriage stopped?  We hadn’t been riding long enough for us to be in the capital city of the old kingdom yet…

“Papa,“ Ludwig worriedly looked at his father.

“I’ll look and see what happened…” papa said.  He left the carriage and went outside to talk to the man who was driving it, who was one of the guards in the castle we lived in.

The rest of us sat quietly in an uncomfortable silence.  I shifted in my seat a little, and Vash glanced out the window to see what was going on.

“See anything?” I asked him.

“We’re too far away from the front of the carriage for me to see what’s going on.”  Vash whispered.

Ludwig huddled closer to mama, and Gilbert did the same. I could tell they were worried; Vash and I were worried too.

“We should go outside and see what’s going on.” I said.

Mama frowned.  “No, stay in here.  You don’t know what could be out there, and unlike Otho, the two of you can’t defend yourselves.  I don’t want either of you to get hurt!”

Mama gently nudged Ludwig and Gilbert off of her, and she stood up.  “I’ll go outside and check on Otho.  I want you to stay in here, no matter what!  Ok?”

We all nodded our heads in agreement, but none of us were telling the truth.  Mama knew that just as well as we did.  She knew if something happened to her or papa, Vash, Gilbert, Ludwig, and I would be outside the carriage in a heartbeat.

She sighed in defeat, shaking her head.  “Please, your papa and I really need you to cooperate with us…”

Mama stood up and left the carriage, making sure to lock it behind her.  The other boys and I were left inside with nothing do to.

“This is boring!” Gilbert yelled.

“Be quiet; listen and see if you can hear what mama and papa are saying outside!” Vash whispered.

The four of us sat in silence, listening intently to mama and papa outside.  To our dismay, their talking was muffled from inside the carriage.

“…Now what should we do?” I asked.

“Do you think mama and papa are ok?” Ludwig seemed nervous as he asked the question…his fear was rubbing off on me, and the more I looked at his face, the more I worried about mama and papa.

“I don’t know…” I said, trailing off at the end.

Vash pointed out the window, his finger smearing the glass.  “Look.” He whispered to me.

I looked outside and noticed papa talking to an old lady.  Mama was standing beside him, and I could see she was startled by something.

The more I watched them converse, the more I began to notice how familiar the old lady was…

“Who’s that?” Gilbert asked, jumping off his seat and crawling over to the window.

“I don’t know; I’ve never seen her before.” Ludwig said, leaning over from where he was sitting.

Vash nudged me.  “You’ve described Madam to me before…from your description, she looks exactly like the lady talking to mama and papa.”

I took a deep breath.  “That’s because the lady talking to them is Madam.”

Vash, Gilbert, and Ludwig gasped.  Gilbert pushed me down and knocked me to the floor so I could no longer see outside the window.

“Hey!  What are you doing!?”

“We can’t let Madam see you.” Vash said.

“So you need to hide!” Gilbert laughed.

I rolled my eyes, but remained hidden.  As much as I hated to admit it…they were right.

Suddenly, the carriage began to drive away.  Vash fell over onto me, and Gilbert fell on one of the carriage seats.  Ludwig toppled over in his seat.

We heard screaming and yelling from outside, but we couldn’t stand up to see what was going on.  The carriage was being driven so recklessly and quickly that none of us could keep our balance.

“What’s going on?” I asked, trying to get out from under Vash.

Vash climbed up into a seat and helped me up to sit down beside him.  “I don’t know; mama and papa aren’t on the carriage with us!”

Ludwig started crying, and Gilbert tried to stand up so he could open the carriage door.

“Don’t open it!” Vash yelled.

“Why not?”

“I think its best that we keep the door locked for now…” Vash said.

Gilbert shrugged and sat down, trying to comfort Ludwig.

The four of us sat in silence for what felt like eternity, with the exception of Ludwig, who was crying so loudly I covered my ears.

*Time skip*

Everything outside the window flew past us in multicolored blurs, but we could tell it was getting late.  Ludwig had fallen asleep on Gilbert’s lap, and Gilbert had fallen asleep as well.  Vash and I were sitting in silence, both thinking to ourselves about the situation we were in.

Suddenly, the carriage came to a stop.  We had entered a building, and it was very dark.

We saw the doorknob on the carriage turn, but the door didn’t open.  The person trying to open the door began banging violently on it, which woke up Gilbert and Ludwig.

“Where are we?” Ludwig asked in a shaky voice.  I could tell he was about to cry.

Gilbert wrapped his arm around Ludwig’s small shoulders.  “Don’t start crying…you know crying is un-awesome…”

Ludwig nodded and sniffed, trying to keep his tears from running.

The person continued banging on the door, and we could hear cursing.

“It’s a good think mama locked the door before she left the carriage earlier!  Now no one can reach us!  We’re safe!” Gilbert said.

All of us smiled, but Vash remained upset.

“Wait…what if they bang the door down…or break the windows?” I asked, in realization that we still weren’t safe.

With perfect timing, the door was somehow taken off the hinges, revealing us to the people outside the door.

There was a man standing there.  He grabbed Ludwig and Gilbert’s arms, and yanked them out of the carriage.  He did the same to Vash and me.

All four of us fell to the floor once we’d been thrown forcefully out of the carriage.  Ludwig was in tears.  Gilbert was about to stand up and start yelling at the guy who’d thrown us, but Vash covered his mouth before he could say anything.  I stared in horror as I noticed…the man looked familiar.

He was the man Madam had talked to the night I ran away from the mansion!

Standing a little farther off from us were several other people, all dressed in fine clothing and expensive jewelry.  In the middle of the group was Madam.

I grabbed Vash’s arm to get his attention. He turned to me, and I motioned my head towards Madam.

He grabbed the necklace around his neck, as if he was trying to hide it from them.  I had Madam’s diary in my pocket, and my necklace was around my neck as well.  I knew I was probably in the most danger, but I was still worried about Vash, Gilbert, and Ludwig!

We all knew exactly what these people, who we assumed were Madam’s aristocrat friends, wanted from us.  They wanted our necklaces.

“Oh, Roderich!  I’m so happy you’re alive!  You have no idea how much I worried about you when you disappeared!” Madam said, trying her best to put on an act.  She widened her arms, wanting me to hug her.

I narrowed my eyes in hatred.  “You’re not fooling me!  I hate you, and I know you don’t care about me!”

Madam’s eyes widened as if she were about to fake-cry.  “Dear, what would make you think that?”

“You were about to leave me at the mansion while you escaped from the revolting peasants!” I said.  “I know exactly what you want from me, so don’t even try to trick me!”

Madam’s eyes blazed, and I knew I probably shouldn’t have said that.  “Fine then, let’s get down to business.  I know you have the necklace!”

I shook my head, but it didn’t convince Madam.  “I accidentally dropped it as I was escaping the mansion.  Last night I visited what was left of the house, and the necklace wasn’t there.  That has led me to believe you have it!” she hissed.

“No I don’t!” I yelled.

Madam motioned towards me, and a few of the other aristocrats grabbed onto me.  Madam walked over, found the necklace chain around my neck, and took the necklace off me.

She walked back to where she’d been standing before, but she didn’t tell the men restraining me to let go.  I started to kick them, but it was hopeless.  They wouldn’t let go of me!

“Check the other children too, just in case they have someone valuable with them.” Madam ordered.

The rest of the aristocrats grabbed onto Vash, Gilbert, and Ludwig.  The aristocrats holding onto Gilbert and Ludwig didn’t find anything.

Suddenly, one of the men holding onto Vash started yelling.  “Madam, this child has a necklace like Roderich’s!”

Madam ran over to Vash and took the necklace off of him.  “What?  How is this possible?  There’s only one necklace from the ancient royal family…or at least that’s what I thought…”

“There must be two!” the man who’d thrown us out of the carriage said.
Madam grinned evilly, and I began to feel sick.

She handed Vash’s necklace to the man.  “I suppose we’ll both be able to claim the throne now!” she said.

The aristocrats laughed, and continued talking, but I was too scared and upset to listen.  I didn’t hear anything else they said after that.

Madam and the man walked out of the room, followed by most of the other aristocrats.  Two of the aristocrat men stayed behind.

The men grabbed onto Vash, Gilbert, Ludwig, and me.  They threw us into a room and locked the door so we’d be unable to escape.

Once we were inside, Gilbert started banging on the door, yelling for the men to let us leave.  Ludwig continued crying.

“What are we going to do?” I asked Vash, fear clouding my voice.

“What do you think we’re going to do!?” He asked me, as if it was an obvious answer.  “We’re going to find mama and papa, and then we’ll stop Madam and her friends from taking over all the kingdoms that belong to us!”

“How are we going to do all of that?  We’re stuck in this room and can’t escape!” Gilbert asked, walking away from the door in defeat.  “This is so un-awesome!”

Determination filled Vash’s eyes, and he answered in a low voice, “We’re going to escape from this room.”

“And how exactly are we going to do that?” I asked.

Vash stayed silent, before finally saying, “I don’t know…but we’ll find a way!”

I frowned.  Our plans to escape weren’t sounding very promising.

There was furniture in the room.  Not many pieces, but the bare minimum.  There was a bed and a chest of drawers.  I walked over to the bed and laid down.

“Maybe some of the aristocrats have been living here in hiding.” I thought aloud.  “Maybe that’s why there’s furniture in here.”

We all stayed in silence after that, trying to think of ways to escape.
Here's the next chapter everyone!  I really hope this wasn't as confusing as I think it was lol...if anyone needs me to explain something, I'd be happy to attempt to!

So pretty much every city/town in the old kingdom split into small kingdoms.  So the old capital city they were going to visit is a small kingdom.  When the heirs to the throne (the owners of the necklaces) take reign again, every small kingdom will become one large one again.  That's what I mean by liberation in this chapter.

I'm sorry if this was a confusing chapter!

I don't own Hetalia, I only own this fanfic.
