“(Reader Name), we need your help.”

“Please help us (Reader Name)!”

“We would greatly appreciate your assistance in our cause, (Reader Name).”

Your house phone had been ringing, and you had just answered it.  You were surprised to find that your good friends Toris, Raivis, and Eduard were calling.  You had known the three men for a long time, and they occasionally called you, but you hadn’t been expecting such a sudden phone call from them.  Especially since they were asking for your help!

Of the three men, you were closest to Toris.  You had met him when you had visited Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, several years ago.  He had shown you around, and the two of you had become friends during your trip.  He had introduced you to Raivis and Eduard while you were there, and you had become friends with them too.  Still, you remained closest to Toris, and had even began to love him.  You were worried he didn’t feel the same, so you decided not to tell him about the feelings you had for him.

Toris was the one holding the phone, but you could hear Raivis and Eduard talking in the background.

“Ok guys, what do you need help with?” You asked, a little confused.

“Tomorrow, our countries are going to be having a political demonstration, and we were wondering if you would be willing to take part in them…” Toris said.

You furrowed your brow in skepticism.  “What kind of political demonstrations?”

“N-nothing violent or anything, so don’t worry about that (Reader Name)!  It’s going to be a peaceful demonstration…” Toris said, trailing off at the end.

“We want freedom!” Raivis added from the background of the conversation.

“I know you guys have been wanting freedom for a while now.  But what exactly are you going to be doing at the demonstration?”

“Well (Reader Name), we’re all going to hold hands.” Toris answered.  You could hear the muffled sounds of Eduard whispering to Toris in the background, telling him certain things he should mention while trying to convince you to help.

“Just the four of us holding hands?  How is that going to help; does that even count as a political demonstration?” You asked, your skepticism of their plan showing.

“Oh, no, not just the four of us!” Toris said, chuckling.

“Thousands of people!” You heard Raivis say.

After hearing that, your interest was piqued.

“Wow, that’s a lot of people!  What’s your plan?” You asked.

“We’re going to create a chain of people holding hand!  It’ll start in Vilnius, go through Riga, and then it will end in Tallinn!”  Toris answered.

“We’re hoping this protest will help us gain freedom from the Soviet Union.  We would love you to help us.”  Eduard said.

You thought for a moment, and then smiled.  “Of course I’ll help you guys!  But which one of you should I meet up with tomorrow?”

“Well, we’re all going to be in our countries’ capitals.  I’ll be in Vilnius, Eduard will be in Tallinn, and Raivis will be in Riga.” Toris explained.

Next, you heard muffled conversation between the three men on the other side of the phone.  Apparently they were discussing which of them you should meet up with for the demonstration.

After the short discussion, Toris was back on the line again.  “(Reader Name), we would like for you to meet me in Vilnius, where the chain will be starting.  Is that ok with you?  I mean, you can meet up with Eduard or Raivis if you want, I don’t want you to feel forced to meet up with me or anything-”

You laughed.  “Of course I’m ok meeting up with you Toris!  I would love to!”

“O-ok (Reader Name)!  Thank you so much!” Toris said.  You could tell he was nervous for some reason, but you knew by the sound of his voice that he was smiling.

“You’re welcome, I’m happy to be able to help!”

Toris told you what time to meet him in Vilnius, and after you said your goodbyes, the two of you ended the conversation.

“I wish they had told me about the protest earlier, so I could’ve had more time to plan and prepare for tomorrow…” you thought to yourself as you began to pack your luggage.

You lived far away from Vilnius, so you would have to fly to the city.  You were worried you’d be unable to catch a flight at such a short notice, so you hurriedly grabbed heaps of clothes and necessities and threw them into your suitcase.  From there, you drove to the airport, where you were somehow able to catch a flight to Vilnius.

While on the plane, you came to the realization that you’d forgotten to book a hotel room for you to stay in while you were in Lithuania.

‘What am I going to do once I get there?  I don’t have anywhere to go…’ you worried to yourself as you waited for the plane ride to end.

‘Maybe Toris would let me stay with him at his house…Raivis and Eduard were there today when he was on the phone, but I’m sure they’ve got back to their homes now…then again, I don’t want to seem like I’m intruding…but apparently they all managed to leave Ivan’s house for this protest, so I’m sure Toris is at his house…’

The plane began to land, and after grabbing your luggage, you walked down the streets of the capital before you came to the familiar house of your friend. Ringing the doorbell, you waited nervously for Toris to open the door.

The large door opened.  “Hello, who’s th-” Toris’s eyes widened when he saw you standing on his doorstep.  “(Reader Name)!  You’re already here!”

You nodded.  “I know it’s late at night, but my plane just landed.  I don’t have anywhere to go, so I was wondering if I could stay with you tonight?”
Toris grinned shyly.  True, it was about 3 a.m., but that didn’t matter.  He was just happy to see you had come to support him and his friends as they tried to gain their freedom.  That, and he was glad he would be able to see you again.

“Of course you can stay here (Reader Name)!  Here, come inside…” Toris opened the door wider and you walked inside his house.

“You can stay in the spare bedroom, down the hall on the left.” Toris said after he shut the front door and began leading you through his house.

“Thanks Toris! I know waking you up during the middle of the night to ask if I can stay here is a big favor, but I really appreciate your help!”  You said as you entered the spare bedroom and placed your luggage in the corner of the room.

“Oh no, this is nothing.  I appreciate your help; you came all the way here just to participate in the protest!  I’m the one who should be thanking you!” Toris said.

You smiled.  “I’m happy to help you and the others gain their freedom.  I know how much you’ve wanted to be free, and I hope this will help you one step closer to your goal.”

“T-thank you, (Reader Name).” Toris said, blushing a little.

You giggled.  “No problem!  Well, I guess we should go on to sleep so we’ll be ready for tomorrow, right?”

“Yes, you’re right!  Goodnight (Reader Name)!” Toris said as he walked towards the bedroom door.

You grinned.  “Goodnight!”

*Time Skip*

You felt someone shaking your shoulder, and heard the quiet and sweet voice of Toris trying to wake you up.

“(Reader Name)…(Reader Name) it’s almost time for the protest to start…”

Still half asleep, you groaned and rolled over in bed.

“She must be experiencing jetlag…” you heard your Lithuanian friend whisper to himself.

Earlier that day when you’d woken up you had still felt tired.  You’d decided to take a nap, and Toris had promised to wake you up before the protest started.

After a few more minutes of Toris prodding your side, you finally awakened.

“(Reader Name), the protest is starting soon.” Toris informed you again.

You sprang out of bed and began getting ready.  Toris grinned as you tried to comb your hair, which was in a tangled mess from your movement while you’d been sleeping.

Once you were both ready, you left the house and entered the streets of Vilnius.

Toris walked over to where the chain was beginning, and you stood beside him.  Smiling, Toris held your hand, and you held his.

The chain of people holding hands began to form, and you giggled.  “Just think, Raivis and Eduard are in their capital cities holding hands with people too, at the exact same time we are!”

Toris laughed softly.  “We all want our country to be free from The Soviet Union.  We’re all hoping this protest will make a difference…”

Suddenly, people that were holding hands in the chain began to sing in Lithuanian.  Toris began to sing along with them.

You were unsure of what to do.  You’d never heard the songs they were singing before, and you looked around nervously.

“(Reader Name), just try to hum along to the songs, ok?” Toris said once he noticed you were confused.

You smiled and nodded, and started to hum along to the patriotic and protesting songs that the people were singing.

“There are tons of people here…” you heard Toris mummer.  You could tell he was overjoyed by the outcome of the protest.

“I heard someone say there were about two million people taking part in this.” one of the people standing beside Toris said.

Toris smiled and had a dreamlike look on his face.  He was surprised, and was barely able to talk for how happy he was.  “That’s…that’s amazing…”

The people continued to sing, pouring their hearts out into the lyrics of the songs they were reciting.  Passionately showing their love for their country, and showing their desire for independence.  Songs filled the air throughout the three Baltic countries, uniting them and proving just how strong their patriotism was.  The powerful songs and voices gracefully echoed around you, and you closed your eyes.  It was so beautiful to see just how determined the citizens of Lithuania were to win their freedom.  What made it even more overwhelmingly emotional was that citizens in Latvia and Estonia had agreed to join together too, proving how much the protest meant to everyone.  The chain of people, hand-in-hand, went across three countries.

Soon the protest ended, and everyone began to let go of each other’s hands and went on about their business.  Except for you and Toris.  The two of you continued to stand together holding hands.

“T-That was just…just…magical.”  Toris gasped, still daze-like from the outcome of the peaceful protest.

“You’re right, it was.” You said, squeezing Toris’s hand tighter.

“(Reader Name), I know I’ve already said this many times, but thank you so much for coming to support me, Eduard, and Raivis.”

“You’re welcome; I’m glad I was able to participate.” You replied.  “I care a lot about you guys!”

Toris smiled and looked to the ground timidly.  “It makes me happy to know you do.  I love you, (Reader Name)…”

You gasped once your mind registered what Toris had just said.

Toris began shaking his head and stuttering.  “N-no, I didn’t m-mean to say that!  I m-meant to say that I care about you!  But I do love you (Reader Name), I just…” Toris sighed, angry with himself.  “I wasn’t planning on telling you yet…”

He tried to hide the blush that was turning his face a crimson hue, but you could still see his flushed face.

Your face was becoming just as red as Toris’s.  “Don’t worry, I-I love you too!” You said, a huge grin forming on your face when Toris smiled in embarrassment and happiness.

“R-really?  It’s great that we feel the same way!” he cheered, his face flushing to an even deeper scarlet than before.

The two of you continued standing there, blushing in silent bashfulness.  Toris finally broke the silence.

“W-would you be ok with me kissing you?  I don’t want to kiss you if you’re not ok with it, and-”

Before he could continue, you hugged him close to you.  Taking that as your way of saying it was ok, Toris leaned down to your height and brought his lips to yours.

At first you could tell he was nervous, and you were nervous too.  After several seconds the two of you got over your nervousness, and the quivering lips that had once been pressed against yours were now lovingly deepening the kiss with more confidence.

Pulling away from the kiss, the two of you smiled and happily began to head home, holding hands as you walked through the Vilnius streets.

*Time Skip*

“Oh no, (Reader Name), look at this…”

You and Toris had just gotten home, and Toris was currently watching the old T.V. he had in his living room.

You strolled into the room and sat down on the couch with Toris.  A news report was on the T.V. screen; it was in Lithuanian, but Toris had turned on the English subtitles for you to read so you could understand what was going on.

It showed people holding hands singing, all throughout the countryside and big cities in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

In one scene you could see Eduard in Estonia’s capital city, Tallinn, holding hands and singing.

In another scene, you saw Raivis in Latvia’s capital city, Riga, holding hands and singing too.

When it came to another scene, it showed you and Toris singing and holding hands.  You and Toris were happy to see you were on T.V., until…

“Why would someone be filming us kiss?” Toris asked, blushing as much as he had earlier when the two of you had kissed.  You were blushing just as much as he was.

On the T.V. screen, it showed you and Toris kissing after the protest had ended.

At that moment, the house phone began to ring.  Toris got off the couch and answered the phone.

You turned down the T.V. so you could hear what the conversation was about on the phone.

“Oh no, they’re not showing it in Estonia too, are they?  What?  They are?  Don’t act like that Eduard, you already knew that I loved (Reader Name) and you shouldn’t be teasing me about this…”

Eduard continued to talk on the other end of the phone, but Toris hung up on him.

Just as he hung up, the phone began to ring again.

Answering once more, Toris began to talk.  “Eduard, I said stop- oh, Raivis, I’m sorry!  I thought you were Eduard!  No, please don’t feel upset now, I wasn’t fussing at you…Oh no, they’re showing in on the news in Latvia too?”

Normally you would’ve thought it was cool to be on T.V.

But apparently yours and Toris’s kiss had gone international, and that made you wonder how many other news stations in other countries were showing you and Toris kissing…

*Time Skip Several Years*

“Finally, after all these years, we’re free!” Raivis cried happily.

Eduard smiled and jumped happily in his seat, which made his glasses fall down his face a little.  Toris grinned from where the two of you were sitting on the couch, holding hands.

Lithuania had gained independence several months ago, and several days ago Estonia had gained independence.  The day after Estonia gained independence, Latvia gained independence as well.  Toris, Eduard, and Raivis had decided to celebrate their countries gaining freedom by having a small party at Toris’s house, which was also now your house.

After the news report was aired on T.V. with you and Toris kissing, all of your friends and Toris’s friends had called that night to either congratulate or tease you for your new relationship.

Once Lithuania gained independence, Toris proposed to you and the two of you got married. The party you were having was also being held to celebrate your marriage.

“Our determination and hard work paid off!” Eduard cheered.

“We’ve all earned our independence now, and hopefully we’ll be able to all stay friends and united like we were during our hard times.  We should honor those who helped us gain our freedom,” Toris smiled and turned to you.  “And because of the protest several years ago, (Reader Name) and I were able to confess that we loved each other.”

Toris hugged you closer to him.  Kissing your cheek, Toris whispered, “I love you”.

“Oh my, isn’t that lovely.  I should take pictures of them kissing and hugging, and then I should send the pictures to the news agency for them to air on T.V.  The news agency seems to like filming you two kissing.”  Eduard said, smirking.  Raivas started laughing.

You giggled, shaking your head, and Toris blushed.  “Eduard, stop it…”

“Don’t worry Toris, Eduard is only jealous that you were able to have a girlfriend and get married before he did!”  Raivas innocently stated, trying to improve the situation.

Instead, he only made it worse.

“Raivis!  I am not jealous!”

“But Eduard, you told me that you were jealous yesterday-”

“You weren’t supposed to tell them that!”

You giggled and Toris chuckled, gently kissing your lips as the four of you continued to celebrate the Baltic States and their freedom from the Soviet Union.
This fanfiction is based on the 1989 Baltic Way/Baltic Chain/Chain of Freedom/Singing Revolution. The fact this actually took place and there were that many people joined together at once from three different countries is just awe-inspiring. I read about it in a book and did research on the event, but I don't know a lot of history about the Baltic States. If I made any mistakes or need to correct something, please tell me! :) I tried to make this as historically accurate as possible!

I hope you all enjoy! This is a contest entry for :iconhouse-of-hetalia: and my theme was #50, Freedom. I really, really hope I stayed within the theme in this. :P It's about the Baltics gaining freedom, so that's my explanation for writing about it. Also, the Baltic characters need more love! So this way my way of giving them more recognition. ^^

I don't own Hetalia or the characters, and I don't own the historical event, either. I'm not sure if the event is copyrighted or anything lol, but hey, just to be safe! XD I only own the fanfiction.
